What Makes It Unique?

The philosophy behind StrengthsFinder is what makes it unique. When educational psychologist Donald O. Clifton first designed the interviews that subsequently became the basis for the StrengthsFinder, he began by asking, “What would happen if we studied what is right with people?” Thus emerged a philosophy of using talents as the basis for consistent achievement of excellence (strength). Specifically, the strengths philosophy is the assertion that individuals can gain far more when they expend effort to build on their greatest talents than when they spend a comparable amount of effort to remediate their weaknesses.

What Do You Do?

You will be presented with a series of paired phrases, such as “I get to know people individually,”  and “I accept many types of people.” These descriptors appear on the screen as if anchoring opposite poles of a continuum. From that pair, the respondent is asked to choose the statement that best describes him or her and the extent to which that chosen option is descriptive of him or her. The participant gets 20 seconds to respond before the system moves on to the next item pair. The intent of the time limit is to elicit top-of-mind responses; developmental research shows that the 20-second limit resulted in a negligible item non-completion rate.

How Credible Is It?

The sample size is in excess of 10,000 people of diverse age, race and sex. Dr Jordan Peterson and his team have produced the most comprehensive and accurate personality report that is currently available. This model has become quite popular in the area of psychology and the science paper which first announced it has gone on to accrue over 750 citations, which is a lot for a scientific paper, and especially one which has only been around for 10 years. This has resulted in the paper becoming something of a classic.

What About The Results?

An online report accessed through the web interface tells you how you rank, according to your self-report compared to others, in percentile terms. You will receive information about your position along each of the Big Five dimensions of Extraversion (associated with positive emotion), Neuroticism (negative emotion), Agreeableness (the primary dimension of care for others), Conscientiousness (associated with duty, precision and responsibility) and Openness (interest in ideas and aesthetics), including customized descriptive paragraphs for your specific percentile positions. That five-dimensional description will be further expanded upon and developed for each of the ten aspects of the Big Five:

Extraversion

Enthusiasm – spontaneous joy and engagement
Assertiveness – social dominance, often verbal in nature

Neuroticism

Withdrawal – the tendency to avoid in the face of uncertainty
Volatility – the tendency to become irritable and upset when things go wrong

Agreeableness

Compassion – the tendency to empathically experience the emotion of others
Politeness – the proclivity to abide by interpersonal norms

Conscientiousness

Industriousness – the ability to engage in sustained, goal-directed effort
Orderliness – the tendency to schedule, organize and systematize

Openness to Experience

Openness – creativity and aesthetic sensitivity
Intellect – interest in abstract concepts and ideas

What Do We Think?

Quick, comprehensive and easy to both take and interpret. It’s hard to find another test which balances both scientific rigor and a simple, straightforward set of results which anyone can use to both understand themselves and others. Don’t expect a checklist of actions to ‘fix’ or ‘change’ your results, that’s not the point. The clue is in the name, Understand Myself.
